Thursday 16th March saw three intrepid adventure riders set off from Yandina for some fun in the dirt. Click on the images for larger versions. Due to heavy recent rain we were confident that the dust would be at a minimum at last. Pete Webb (Honda CRF300), Paul Norton (BMW R1200GSA LC) & myself (BMW R1200GS LC) took to the hills out the back of Wappa Dam. Initially a nice mix of twisty tar and dirt to get us warmed up and linked up with Cooloolabin Rd. near the dam. A nice, civilised swing up the range for a short distance, left onto Mapleton Forest Rd and then down to Cedar Creek Rd. which is a quite enjoyable run along to the Eumundi - Kenilworth Road.
A blast along the blacktop then, hang a right onto Moy Pocket and out to the Gympie Brooloo Road. A little bit of southing then until we reached Coonoongibber Road which was new to me. This connected us to Yabba Creek Road near Imbil and then we dropped onto the Bella Creek Road to go searching for Borgan Road (which, by the way, has a rather obscure sign to indicate its position). This is interesting because it leads to a property which has been bought to be the site of a new power station. On the other side of this property is an almighty climb up the ridge for quite a way with inumerable huge "whoa Boys" to make it interesting. This stage was great fun as long as you took care to not step off the edge and plummet to the creek below! This then meets Tungi Road which leads into Jimna for a nice rest and refreshments.
Appetites sated, we moved on down the Kilcoy-Murgon road to Bellthorpe Road which is a really nice, very enjoyable ride suitable for all skill levels. Arriving at the bridge, we were quite surprised to find that some enterprising soul had taken a power saw to the large metal railings that had been installed across the bridge to prevent access due to structural problems. This saved us a little bit of squirming around the edge of the barrier and allowed us to proceed. The latter stages of the Bellthorpe West Road are really breathtaking examples of local rainforest and always a pleasure to ride through. The recent dry spell was nowhere in evidence here.
Once in Bellthorpe proper, we shot along the great local roads until we hit the main drag and dispersed in our seperate directions.
A great day out with good friends. That is why we ride.
